A CBD lab report, often called a certificate of analysis (COA), records the results of tests carried out on a sample. It can help you check cannabinoid measurements, identify the product or batch that was tested and see the scope of the laboratory work.
The most important point is that a COA is only as useful as its relevance and scope. A beautifully formatted report for the wrong batch tells you little about the product in your hand, and a cannabinoid-only panel does not prove that every possible contaminant was tested. This guide explains how to read a COA in a practical order without treating it as more conclusive than it is.
The 60-second COA checklist
Before analysing individual cannabinoid numbers, check these seven things:
- Product identity: does the name, format and strength match?
- Batch or lot: can you link the report to the relevant batch?
- Laboratory: is the testing laboratory clearly named?
- Date: when was the sample received or tested and when was the report issued?
- Test scope: which cannabinoids or contaminants were actually analysed?
- Units and limits: are results shown in mg/g, mg/ml, %, µg/g or another unit, and are LOD/LOQ values available?
- Result context: can the numbers be compared meaningfully with the product label?

1. First, make sure the COA relates to the right product
Start at the top of the report rather than jumping straight to the THC line. Look for identifiers such as:
- product or sample name;
- brand;
- strength or formulation;
- batch or lot number;
- sample number assigned by the laboratory;
- sample received, tested or report date.
A batch code that matches the product packaging is particularly useful. If a report instead describes “hemp extract”, “distillate”, “isolate” or another raw material, it may be a report for an ingredient rather than the finished retail product.
Ingredient testing can still be useful, but it answers a different question. It should not automatically be read as a finished-product result after the ingredient has been diluted, blended, flavoured or combined with other materials.
2. Check the laboratory, date and accreditation information
A useful report should identify the laboratory that produced it. Depending on the report, you may also see an accreditation number, test method, analyst information or quality statement.
For claims relating to the UK controlled-cannabinoid framework, the Home Office says testing intended to demonstrate compliance with the exempt-product definition should use an appropriate degree of sensitivity and a suitably accredited laboratory. Its guidance refers to ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for the analytical methods used and identifies UKAS as the relevant UK accrediting body.
That does not mean every logo on a report proves that every test on the page is within an accredited scope. If accreditation is important to the conclusion being drawn, check the laboratory and the relevant method rather than relying on a badge alone.

3. Find the cannabinoid panel and read the headings carefully
A cannabinoid panel may list compounds such as:
- CBD (cannabidiol);
- CBDA (cannabidiolic acid);
- THC or Δ9-THC;
- THCA;
- CBG;
- CBN;
- other cannabinoids included in the laboratory’s method.
The exact panel varies. A blank space or missing cannabinoid does not necessarily mean “zero”; it may mean that compound was not included in the test. Always read the analyte list and any notes explaining the reporting format.
For shopper-facing interpretation, three questions are usually more useful than scanning every line:
- Does the measured CBD broadly correspond with the product description once the units are understood?
- Does the cannabinoid pattern make sense for the stated product type?
- What does the report actually say about controlled cannabinoids, including its test limits?

4. Do not compare numbers until you understand the units
CBD reports can use several units, including:

Do not treat mg/g and mg/ml as interchangeable. Converting between a mass-based result and a volume-based label may require the product’s density and the laboratory’s reporting basis. If the document does not give enough information, it is better to recognise the limitation than to force a rough conversion.

5. Understand ND, LOD and LOQ
Three abbreviations regularly cause confusion:
- ND: not detected under the method and reporting conditions used.
- LOD: limit of detection — the approximate lowest level the method can detect.
- LOQ: limit of quantification — the approximate lowest level the method can quantify with the required reliability.
The laboratory may use slightly different wording, so read its legend or method notes.
Most importantly, “ND” should not automatically be translated into “mathematically absent”. It means the analyte was not detected above the relevant analytical threshold under that test. The sensitivity of the method matters when very small controlled-cannabinoid amounts are being discussed.
6. Compare the measured CBD with the label carefully
Imagine an oil labelled 500mg CBD in 10ml. The intended label concentration is approximately 50mg/ml.
If the COA also reports CBD in mg/ml, the comparison is relatively direct. If it reports mg/g or a percentage, additional information may be needed before you can compare the figures accurately.
Also check whether the COA is testing the whole finished oil or a concentrated ingredient. A 90% CBD isolate report is not supposed to resemble the concentration of a finished 5% oil made using that isolate.
The aim is not to chase a perfectly identical number without context. It is to understand whether the report, sample and units actually correspond with the claim being checked.
7. Read THC and other controlled-cannabinoid results in the UK context
One of the most common mistakes is to reduce the whole UK legal position to a statement such as “THC is under 0.2%”. The Home Office framework for finished CBD products is more specific than that.
Its current factsheet explains that pure CBD is not controlled but a CBD product can contain controlled cannabinoids. It sets out an exempt-product definition with multiple conditions, including a limit of no more than one milligram of each controlled drug in a component part. The Home Office also states that, for this part of its guidance, the applicable unit can be the container, such as a bottle of oil, rather than a supposed typical dose.
A COA therefore needs to be interpreted with the product size, analytical sensitivity, units and relevant controlled cannabinoids in view. A single percentage figure is not a complete legal analysis.

8. Check which contaminant panels were actually run
Some COAs include testing beyond cannabinoid potency. Depending on the product and laboratory, separate panels may cover areas such as:
- heavy metals;
- pesticides;
- residual solvents;
- microbiological parameters;
- mycotoxins.
Do not assume these tests were completed because the cannabinoid page says “pass”. A potency panel and a contaminant panel are different pieces of evidence.
Equally, do not assume a result marked “pass” means the analyte was absent. It may mean the measured value complied with the laboratory’s stated specification or reporting limit. Read the result, specification and legend together.
9. Know what a COA cannot prove
Even a detailed laboratory report has boundaries. On its own, it cannot prove:
- that every future batch will have the same result;
- that the report belongs to your product if the identifiers do not match;
- the absence of substances that were not tested;
- that storage after testing has had no effect on the product;
- that the product is personally suitable for you;
- any medical outcome;
- compliance with every UK regulatory requirement.
For CBD foods and food supplements, novel-food status is a separate issue from the laboratory report. The Food Standards Agency says CBD extracts, isolates, synthetic CBD and foods to which they are added are novel foods that require authorisation. In England and Wales, it maintains a list of certain CBD food products linked to applications that may remain on the market while regulatory decisions are pending. A COA does not establish novel-food authorisation. Check the current FSA CBD guidance for the latest position.
10. Use the COA as part of the wider product check
A report becomes most useful when it agrees with the wider product information. Check it alongside:
- the retail label;
- the declared total CBD and product size;
- the stated CBD type;
- the ingredient list;
- the batch or lot code;
- the brand’s product specification.

The best way to read a COA is methodically: identify the sample, understand the units, check the test scope and limits, then interpret the cannabinoid results in the context of the actual finished product.
